What are High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D. or HID) Xenon lighting systems or lamps?
High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D.) or metal halide gas discharge are state-of-the-art lighting technology that are used in place of standard incandescent lamps or halogen gas capsules that use a heated tungsten filament. H.I.D. lamps operate more like vapor filled streetlights or like an electronic flash. Instead of a filament they create light by zapping an arc between two electrodes within a quartz capsule. That arc excites a mixture of gasses, usually Xenon and metal halides, such as Sodium Iodine and Scandium Iodine. The light produced by an H.I.D. Xenon lighting system is greater than a standard halogen bulb and with much less power consumption. H.I.D. Xenon lighting systems appear as a bright white beam which closely resembles daylight. The bright white beam offers much greater visibility with a 5X increase in light intensity compared to standard incandescent landing lights, or a 3X increase compared to halogen lamps. The light intensity is around 3200 lumens or 500'000 candle power. Why do H.I.D. lighting systems have a slight bluish light component? The color of a light is determined by its color temperature. The arc across the Xenon (or other metal halides) filled electrodes inside of the capsule give off a cooler color temperature (4,100 degrees K) that is closer to true white. So when you compare the color incandescent or halogen lights against the color of H.I.D. lights, the H.I.D. beam look blue/white and the halogen or standard lights appear more yellow. How long will my new H.I.D. light last? H.I.D. lamps are designed to last a long time. More than 10 times longer than a conventional halogen lamp and over 30 times longer than standard incandescent lamps. Are replacement bulbs available for the lights we sell? H.I.D. bulbs are designed to last up to 30 times longer than standard incandescent lights, typically around 3,000 hours. But should you ever need a replacement, you can purchase a PL14/Lamp, PL24/6K/Lamp, AEX20/Lamp, or AEX25/Lamp from us (see lamps). These lamps will fit 14W HID PowerLight PL14, PL24 & PL24-S, AEX20, and AEX25 respectively. What are the advantages of Lithium Batteries? Li-Ion has quickly become the emerging standard for portable power. Li-Ion batteries produce the same energy as NiMH batteries but weigh approximately 35% less. This is crucial in applications such as portable searchlights where the battery makes up a significant portion of the device's weight. Another reason Li-Ion batteries have become so popular is that they do not suffer from the memory effect. NiCad batteries, and to a lesser extent NiMH batteries, are prone to what is referred to as the "memory effect". What this means is that if a battery is repeatedly only partially discharged before recharging, the battery "forgets" that it has the capacity to further discharge all the way down. Example: If you, on a regular basis, fully charge your battery and then use only 50% of its capacity before the next recharge, eventually the battery will become unaware of its extra 50% capacity which has remained unused. The battery will remain functional, but only at 50% of its original capacity. Li-Ion batteries can be charged at any point in their state of discharge and suffer no memory effect. Our Li-Ion batteries can be installed either way (positive and negative at both ends). This makes loading in the dark a snap! They are also environmentally friendly because they don't contain toxic materials such as Cadmium or Mercury. What is an LED? High wattage LED flashlights (1 watt or more) do give a beam of light. It is generally a smooth circle of light with no clearly defined edge and does not feature a true center "hot spot" when compared to a standard non-LED flashlight. The color temperature of white LED light can look noticeably whiter, closer to sunlight, when compared to the light from a standard non-LED flashlight. In fact, standard non-LED lights often look yellow in comparison. However, the color of white LED light will vary from flashlight to flashlight and sometimes has a slight blueish or greenish appearance. High wattage LED bulbs also offer a 10,000+ hour life eliminating the need for costly replacement bulbs. (LED bulb life varies depending on model.) |
